What is Cambridge English and what is it for?

Cambridge English is a family of official qualifications developed by the University of Cambridge. They are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and are valid for life: once you have them, you never need to renew them. The most requested ones in the professional and academic world are:

  • B2 First (FCE): the professional standard. It shows you can communicate effectively in English in most work and study situations. Highly valued by multinational companies.
  • C1 Advanced (CAE): for profiles with intensive use of English. Required by many international universities and leading companies in high-value sectors.
  • C2 Proficiency (CPE): the highest level on the scale, practically equivalent to native command of the language.

Cambridge English qualifications are recognised by more than 25,000 organisations worldwide, from Fortune 500 companies to Russell Group universities and government bodies in over 130 countries. — Cambridge Assessment English, Global recognition report, 2025

Tips for exam day

Reading & Use of English

Manage your time carefully and don’t get stuck on one question. Move on, mark the ones you’re unsure about and come back if you have time left. In multiple-choice tasks, your first instinct is often right.

Writing

Always give your texts a clear structure: introduction, body with arguments, and conclusion. Organisation counts as much as content. Avoid repeating the same structures: varied vocabulary earns you points directly.

Speaking

Examiners value fluency and communication over perfect grammar. If you make a mistake, correct it naturally and carry on. Keeping the conversation going matters more than speaking without errors.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Cambridge certificate expire?

No. Cambridge certificates have no expiry date. Once you have one, it is valid for life, which sets it apart from many other language certification systems.

Can I take the exam without specific preparation at a school?

Technically yes, but it’s not recommended. The exam has a very specific format that you need to know well. Good preparation doesn’t just improve your chances of passing, it also raises your final score significantly, which directly affects how your certificate is valued.
