Do you need to prove your level of English but can’t decide between LanguageCert or Cambridge? It’s one of the questions we hear most at our school in Mislata. Both are official, recognised certificates, but they work differently. In this article we explain the differences so you can pick the exam that best fits your goal, your schedule and the way you like to be tested.
What do they have in common?
First, the important part: both certificates follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), so a LanguageCert B2 and a Cambridge B2 show the same level of English. Both test all four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), and neither certificate expires, although some employers or universities ask for a recent one.
Cambridge English: the classic
Cambridge English exams are created by Cambridge University Press & Assessment and have been a benchmark for decades. The best known are:
- A2 Key (KET)
- B1 Preliminary (PET)
- B2 First (FCE), the most popular in Spain
- C1 Advanced (CAE)
- C2 Proficiency (CPE)
All four skills are usually tested in the same exam session, and the speaking test is done in pairs with another candidate. It’s a demanding exam that employers and universities around the world know well.
LanguageCert: the flexible option
LanguageCert is an official certificate regulated by Ofqual, the body that oversees qualifications in the United Kingdom. It offers exams from A1 to C2 and has become very popular in Spain because of its flexibility:
- The written exam (listening, reading and writing) and the speaking exam are separate modules: you can take both or just the one you need.
- The speaking test is one-to-one with the examiner, so you don’t depend on a partner.
- There are plenty of exam dates and results usually arrive quickly.
At Koyot Academy we are an official LanguageCert exam centre, so you can prepare and sit the exam in the same place.
There is no better certificate, only the one that fits your goal best.
Which one suits your goal?
For university or Erasmus
Many universities accept both certificates to prove a B1 or B2 level. Always check your university’s list of accepted qualifications. If your deadline is close, LanguageCert’s flexibility can be a big advantage.
For work or public-sector exams
Either one will strengthen your CV. For public-sector exams and job pools, check the official requirements: they list which certificates and levels are valid.
If the speaking test makes you nervous
With LanguageCert you do the speaking test on your own. With Cambridge you do it in pairs, which many students like because it feels closer to a real conversation.
For maximum international recognition
Cambridge is probably the best-known name worldwide, especially if you plan to study outside Spain.

Frequently asked questions
Is LanguageCert easier than Cambridge?
No, the level is the same because both follow the CEFR. What changes is the format. Many students feel more comfortable with LanguageCert because of the separate modules and the one-to-one speaking test.
Can I take the LanguageCert exam in Mislata?
Yes. Koyot Academy is an official LanguageCert exam centre, so you can sit the exam at our school.
Do these certificates expire?
No. Neither the Cambridge nor the LanguageCert certificate expires, although some institutions ask for a certificate from the last few years.
