“I’m too old for this”, “I was never good at it at school”, “I don’t have time”… These are the things we hear most from students aged 30, 40 or 60. And almost all of them discover the same thing: you can absolutely learn English as an adult, and in some ways it is even easier than as a child.

Is it really harder to learn as an adult?

Children have one advantage: they usually pick up a more natural accent. But adults have other very important advantages. You understand how grammar works, you know how to organise yourself and, above all, you have a clear reason to learn: work, travel, your children or simply a personal challenge.

The advantages of learning English as an adult

  • Clear goals. You know why you want English, which helps you focus on what you really need.
  • Analytical skills. You can understand a rule and apply it, instead of learning only by repetition.
  • Life experience. You have lots to talk about: your work, your travels, your family.
  • Commitment. When you decide to do something, you know how to stick to it.
  • You choose. The timetable, pace and type of class fit around your life.

The 5 most common obstacles (and how to overcome them)

1. “I don’t have time”

You don’t need free hours every day. Two classes a week and a little practice in the car or on the metro already make a difference.

2. Feeling shy about speaking

This is the most common one. In a small group with a good atmosphere, the shyness disappears sooner than you think: everyone is in the same boat.

3. “I forget everything”

Forgetting is part of the process. What works is reviewing often and using English in real situations, not memorising lists.

4. Not noticing progress

Record your starting point with a level test and set small goals: understanding a series with subtitles, ordering in a restaurant, writing an email.

5. Bad memories from school

Many adults learned English with verb lists and grammar tests. A communicative class, where you speak from day one, is a completely different experience.

How to start, step by step

  1. Take a level test. You may know more than you think. Here we explain the English levels from A1 to C2.
  2. Set a concrete goal: a trip, a job interview, a certificate.
  3. Block a fixed time in your week, just as you would for the gym.
  4. Choose small groups where you can speak a lot and get corrections.
  5. Bring English into your daily life with 7 easy ways to practise English every day.

There is no right age to learn English. There is a right moment, and it is usually when you have a reason.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn English at 50 or 60?

Yes. Age is not the deciding factor: consistency and the type of class are. We have students of all ages.

How long until I can hold a conversation?

It depends on your starting point and how many hours you put in. Cambridge estimates around 200 guided learning hours per level, but many students find they start speaking more freely within the first months of regular classes.

Group classes or private lessons?

A small group gives you real conversation and motivation; private lessons are faster for specific topics. Many adults start in a group and add a few private lessons before an exam or an interview.
