There are lots of language schools in Valencia, and from the outside they all look the same. But choosing well makes the difference between really learning and giving up after three months. If you’re looking for a language school in Valencia, here are eight things we recommend checking before you sign up.

1. Class size

In a group of twenty people you speak for a few minutes per lesson. In a small group you speak much more, the teacher gets to know you and can correct your mistakes. Always ask what the maximum number of students per class is.

2. The teachers

A good teacher doesn’t just know the language: they can explain it, motivate you and adapt the lesson to the group. Ask about their experience and whether they are native or native-level speakers. Native teachers get you used to real pronunciation and expressions from the start.

3. The method

If your goal is to communicate, look for a communicative method: lessons where you speak from day one, with real-life situations, not just grammar lists. Grammar matters, but it should serve the conversation.

4. A level test before you start

A good school wants to know your level before placing you in a group. Start too low and you’ll be bored; too high and you’ll get frustrated. Ask how they assess your level at the start.

The best school isn’t the biggest one, it’s the one that gets you talking.

5. Schedules that fit your life

The best course is useless if you can’t make it. Check that there are morning and afternoon groups, and ask what happens if you miss a class.

6. Official exam preparation

If you need a certificate for university, work or a public-sector exam, choose a school that prepares official exams. Even better if it is an exam centre: you prepare and sit the exam in the same place, somewhere you already know.

7. Location

It sounds like a detail, but a school near your home or work makes it much easier to stay consistent. Check how to get there by public transport and whether there’s parking nearby.

8. Reviews from other students

Google reviews say a lot about a school: how students are treated, whether progress is noticeable and whether the atmosphere is pleasant. Read several, not just the score.

Bonus: which languages does it offer?

If more than one person at home wants to learn, or you’d like to add another language later, it helps if the school offers several. And if you’re a company, ask whether they organise language classes for companies.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I notice progress?

With regular classes and a bit of practice at home, most students notice clear improvement within a few months, especially in speaking.

Is a private or group class better?

In a group you practise conversation with other people and it’s more affordable. Private lessons go completely at your pace and are ideal for very specific goals.

Can I start mid-course?

At many schools you can, as long as there’s a group at your level. Ask the school directly.
