The Cambridge English exam has a reputation for being tough, but with the right preparation it is absolutely manageable. Here are 7 practical tips that genuinely make a difference, whether you are sitting the B2 First or the C1 Advanced.

1. Know the exam format inside out
Before you dive into content, study the format itself: Reading & Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Each part has its own question types and pacing. The sooner you know the structure, the fewer surprises await you on exam day.
2. Practise with real official past papers
Cambridge English publishes free sample papers on its official website. Doing them under real conditions, with a clock in front of you, is far more effective than reviewing grammar rules in isolation.
Do not study to pass the exam — study to master the language. The pass follows naturally.

3. Build a habit, not a last-minute sprint
30–45 minutes a day, every day, works far better than one marathon session the weekend before the exam. Consistency trains your brain to think in English, not just to memorise rules.
4. Tackle your weakest skill first
Struggling with Speaking but fine on Reading? Spend more time on whatever you find hardest. It is tempting to only practise what you are already good at because it feels rewarding, but that will not raise your overall score.

5. Speak out loud, even on your own
The Speaking part causes the most nerves. Practise describing photos, giving your opinion on everyday topics, or simulating the conversation with a partner — out loud. Your mouth needs training just as much as your brain.
6. Time yourself like it is the real thing
Many students know the content but run out of time on the actual exam. Always practise with a visible timer — it helps you work out how long to spend on each question without getting stuck.
7. Get feedback from a certified teacher
It is very hard to catch your own Writing or Speaking mistakes. A teacher experienced with Cambridge exams knows exactly what examiners look for and can correct you before those mistakes cost you points on the day.
