If you are learning German to work, study or live in a German-speaking country, the Goethe-Zertifikat is probably the certificate you hear about most. We explain what it is, which levels there are, what the exam looks like and how to prepare for it from Valencia.

What is the Goethe-Zertifikat?

It is the official German certificate of the Goethe-Institut, Germany’s cultural institute abroad. There is an exam for each level of the Common European Framework, from A1 to C2, and it is recognised by employers, universities and institutions worldwide.

ExamLevelTypically useful for
Goethe-Zertifikat A1 and A2BasicFirst steps, travel and some formalities
Goethe-Zertifikat B1IntermediateWork and daily life in Germany
Goethe-Zertifikat B2Upper intermediateSkilled jobs and some studies
Goethe-Zertifikat C1 and C2AdvancedUniversity, demanding roles and teaching

Before choosing, always check which level your employer, university or the procedure you need requires.

The exam: the B1 as an example

B1 is one of the most requested levels. The exam has four modules:

  • Lesen (reading): 65 minutes.
  • Hören (listening): around 40 minutes.
  • Schreiben (writing): 60 minutes.
  • Sprechen (speaking): around 15 minutes, usually in pairs.

A big advantage: the exam is modular. You can take all four modules at once or only the ones you need, and if you fail one, you can retake just that module.

With the modular format, one bad day in one paper doesn’t force you to start from scratch.

Goethe-Zertifikat or TestDaF?

If your goal is to study at a German university, you will also hear about the TestDaF, an exam designed specifically for university admission. For work and daily life, the Goethe-Zertifikat is usually the more common choice. At Koyot Academy we prepare both.

  • Review the key grammar of the level, such as cases and word order.
