It is one of the questions we hear most: how long does it take to get a B2 in English? Maybe you need it to finish your degree, for a master’s, a public exam or a new job. The answer depends on where you start, but there are official figures that help you make a realistic plan.
The short answer: around 200 hours per level
According to Cambridge English, a learner needs approximately 200 guided learning hours to move up one level of the Common European Framework. So if you already have a solid B1, you will need around 200 hours to reach B2.
If you are starting lower, these are the cumulative hours Cambridge estimates from zero:
| Level | Approximate hours from zero | Cambridge exam |
|---|---|---|
| A2 | 180–200 | A2 Key |
| B1 | 350–400 | B1 Preliminary |
| B2 | 500–600 | B2 First |
| C1 | 700–800 | C1 Advanced |
Not sure what level you are? We explain it in English levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.
Hours are not months: do your own maths
“Guided learning hours” include classes and supervised study, not just time in the classroom. What really sets your timeline is how many hours a week you put in. Two examples for going from B1 to B2 (around 200 hours):
- Steady pace: two one-hour classes a week plus 3 hours of practice at home = 5 hours a week. About 40 weeks, roughly 9 to 10 months.
- Intensive pace: 4 hours of class and 4 hours of practice a week = 8 hours a week. About 25 weeks, roughly 6 months.
These are estimates: some students move faster, others need a bit more time. That is why starting with a level test is so useful.
It is not about studying a lot for one month, but about studying a little every week without stopping.
What affects how long it takes
- Your real starting level. Many people think they are B1 when they are a high A2, or the other way round.
- Consistency. Five hours spread over the week work better than five hours on a Saturday.
- Contact with English outside class: series, podcasts, reading, conversation.
- Your weakest skill. Many students understand well but struggle to speak or write, and the exam tests all four skills.
- Knowing the exam format. Knowing what you will be asked saves a lot of time.

How to reach B2 sooner
- Take a level test to know exactly where you are starting from.
- Set an exam date and plan backwards.
- Practise a little every day. Here are 7 easy ways to practise English every day.
- Do mock exams in real conditions to manage your time.
- Speak from day one, even if you make mistakes: speaking is the hardest skill to improve at the last minute.
