If you want to study in France, work in a French-speaking country or simply prove your level of French, sooner or later you will hear about the DELF and the DALF. In this guide we explain what they are, which levels exist, what the exam looks like and how to prepare for it in Valencia.
What are the DELF and DALF?
They are the official French language diplomas of the French Ministry of Education. They are recognised internationally and have no expiry date: once you pass, they are yours for life.
- DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française): levels A1, A2, B1 and B2.
- DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française): advanced levels C1 and C2.
There are versions for every age, such as DELF Prim for children, DELF Junior for teenagers and DELF “tout public” for adults. The format is the same; only the topics change.
DELF and DALF levels
| Diploma | CEFR level | What you show |
|---|---|---|
| DELF A1 | A1 | You can introduce yourself and communicate in very simple situations |
| DELF A2 | A2 | You can handle everyday situations |
| DELF B1 | B1 | You are independent in daily life, when travelling or at work |
| DELF B2 | B2 | You can argue and defend your opinion with ease |
| DALF C1 | C1 | You use French fluently in academic and professional settings |
| DALF C2 | C2 | You master the language in almost any situation |
What is the exam like?
From A1 to C1, the exam has four papers, each marked out of 25:
- Listening (compréhension de l’oral)
- Reading (compréhension des écrits)
- Writing (production écrite)
- Speaking (production orale), in front of examiners
To pass you need at least 50 points out of 100 and a minimum of 5 points in each paper. The DALF C2 is different: it has two larger papers worth 50 points each, combining several skills.
One very weak paper can make you fail even with a good total: prepare all four.
What is each level for?
- DELF B1: a good goal if you want to travel, work or live in a French-speaking country with ease.
- DELF B2: the level French universities usually require for undergraduate study, and many Spanish universities also accept it as proof of a B2 in a foreign language.
- DALF C1 and C2: for postgraduate study, demanding professional roles or teaching.
Before you register, always check which level your university or employer requires.
